 Unit Overview:
The theme of this unit is data; how it is collected, the systems and processes that underpin its storage and management including information communications technology, how data is converted to useful information for operational and strategic management and, finally, how business strategies are formulated around the availability and application of data in its digital form.The impact of business systems on the accounting and data assurance aspects of business are addressed as are communication protocols and infrastructure considerations needed to manage these systems. The unit also addresses the cybersecurity considerations of business systems and relates them to the governance of the organisation.The core of a business information system is the accounting system and the financial data associated with it. Students will acquire foundation knowledge of accounting systems and processes, database design and use, systems documentation, systems development life cycle, systems controls and data integrity.The unit then proceeds to explore how data and systems are used to gain competitive advantage through the development of digital business strategies. Students will gain insights into strategising data by working on a business plan to engage with digital commerce.
