 Unit Overview:
In this unit, students will learn advanced theories and practical techniques pivotal for identifying, understanding, and mitigating software and data vulnerabilities that may lead to unanticipated behaviours or exploitation by cyber attackers and methods of mitigating them. These advanced competencies are fundamental for developing automatic auditing systems, identifying vulnerabilities, and designing security analysis and testing methods to protect against cyber threats in the context of data assurance, the quality of accounting and other data, and ensuring heightened levels of cybersecurity for the organisation. The unit covers the application of source code analysis, forming an integral component of penetration testing (ethical hacking). Emphasis is placed on secure programming and software analysis. Concurrently, students gain skills to articulate their findings and solutions effectively, thus honing their communication abilities in both speaking and writing and linking the cybersecurity issues with data assurance. Moreover, this subject opens opportunities for students to engage in national and international security challenges and competitions. These experiences aim to reinforce students’ understanding of societal, legal, and privacy issues in cybersecurity. They are encouraged to apply high-level, advanced problem-solving skills such as modelling, abstraction, and design, utilising both hardware and software fundamentals and advanced routing and switching techniques. This unit integrates the technical aspects of C/C++ programming, ICT management, including IT Governance and advanced cybersecurity concepts, to help students excel in their future professional pursuits in the areas of accounting and data assurance.
