 Unit Overview:
This unit addresses the security of data and systems by highlighting the principles of computer, network and data security and the underpinning technical principles of cyber security. It examines networks and the internet as sources of security threats and solutions and evaluates the security issues that data and information management-handling organizations face. It examines information security in an accounting and data assurance context. The unit covers cyber stalking, fraud, and abuse as well as Denial of Service (DOS) attacks, malware, and evaluates various techniques used by hackers to attempt to penetrate the systems and exploit data. Furthermore, it also covers industrial espionage in cyberspace and the role of encryption. The principles of computer security technologies related to internal security policies in managing data and system security are critically reviewed . Network and vulnerability scanning are also evaluated. The impacts of ICT on organizations and data security are addressed as are the internal and external communications protocols associated with cybersecurity events. The role of infrastructure in enabling data and system security is examined as well as the management of securitization projects and their interactions with sound governance of organizational data and systems. Cyber terrorism and information warfare, and the role of cyber detective and cyber forensics are examined and assessed. Cybersecurity engineering fundamentals in the context of data and systems management, and the internal and external Service Level Agreements (SLA’s) for security service management, are analysed and assessed. Finally, societal, political, legal and professional issues in data and systems security are critically reviewed in this unit.
